Announcements

Grades and Statements of Accomplishment Posted

This time it's for real.

Final course grades have been calculated, and statements of accomplishment have been issued to those of you who achieved an average of 70% or better on the weekly quizzes.

To find your grade and retrieve your statement of accomplishment, please visit your Course Records page.

We are very interested in collecting your feedback about the course so that we can improve future offerings of this and other courses from Johns Hopkins. Please take a few minutes to complete the post-course survey.

Grades and Statements of Accomplishment Delayed

It appears that we were hasty in sending out an announcement about the availability of grades and statements of accomplishment. The grades have been calculated, and the process for issuing statements has been initiated. However, it looks like it takes the system longer than we anticipated. Please be patient. We will send out another notice when we know for sure that the grades and statements have been posted to your Course Records page.

Thanks everyone

Hey everyone,

Tomorrow is the last day of class. I just wanted to say what a pleasure it was to teach it.

Presuming that at some point I will have the opportunity to give feedback to the Coursera leadership, I'll tell them that the forum is the lifeblood of this process. It was amazing to see the activity on there. Next, I'd tell them that their platform is really great. I'd also like to point out all of the effort of their staff, CTLT at Hopkins, Ira Gooding and Therri Usher (a Biostat PhD student). They've all been absolutely essential for me to do this.

I'd like to take a small moment to editorialize about MOOCs. Regardless of where things end up, it is great to see teaching suddenly become one of the most exciting areas in higher education, rather than simply a subsidy for research. Khan Academy, Coursera, EDX, Udacity and others deserve a lot of credit for this revolution. I really hope that the trend of delivering education to everyone continues.

Thanks again for your time; it was an absolute blast to be involved in this!

Hey everyone

Hey troops. There's been some reported issues with downloaded the mp4s for lecture 12 (the streaming appears to work fine). Until we figure it out, here's lecture 12 as an mp4 file. We'll get the link figured out soon.

Hurricane Sandy - Week 5 & 6 Deadline Extensions

We hope that everyone is safe and dry after Hurricane Sandy. The storm hit Johns Hopkins and the Baltimore area, but the damage here was relatively minor in comparison with what happened to our neighbors to the north in New York and New Jersey. Since some of you may need some extra time to do the work for Weeks 5 and 6 because of the storm, we have extended the quiz and homework deadlines by a week.

The new deadlines are:

Week 5 Quiz and Homework are due by 11:59 PM EST on Sunday, November 4
Week 6 Quiz and Homework are due by 11:59 PM EST on Sunday, November 11

Hope the extensions help.

For those who don't like github

I'm sharing the local git repository that I have via google docs. https://docs.google.com/folder/d/0B4QrfwPyx_SQdS14YXZuZHRIWG8/edit

You can find all of the lecture notes files there. Also, if there's corrections, I'll fix them in the notes here first. (It'll take a while to correct the videos.)

Course material

Hi everyone,

There was a question in the forum about using the course materials. For the github stuff, feel free to use however. Some attribution would be nice. But, honestly, I'd just be happy if you found it useful. The main rule is that if you have to extend the same courtesy forward with the materials.

The materials on opencourseware (http://ocw.jhsph.edu/) is all licensed under a creative commons license (use it with some attribution). It's described on that site.

The materials on the Coursera site, like the quizzes and videos, is described here (https://www.coursera.org/about/terms).

The youtube stuff has a youtube license described there. It appears to be pretty flexible.

Please bring it up in the forum if you feel like there's a (reasonable) way in which you'd like to use the materials where you don't think the collection of dissemination methods we've come up with allows.

This class in the news!

Hi everyone,

Nick Anderson, a reporter for The Washington Post newspaper in the United States, is interested in the experience students around the world are having with Coursera. He has a few questions for you if you are willing to answer them via email. This is purely optional and will have no effect at all on on you with respect to the course whether you do it or not. His email is andersonn@washpost.com if you'd like to try to chat with him.

He's particularly interested in these questions:
1)How did you first learn about Coursera and about this course?
2)What do you like about this course so far? How much effort does it require?
3)What do you not like about Coursera and what would you suggest could be improved?
4)Where were you born? How old are you? Where do you live? What is your occupation and what are your career goals?
5)What level of formal schooling did you have before you signed up for this class?
6)How does this learning experience compare to what you received in your previous schooling?

Week 2

Hey everyone,

Welcome to week 2 of Mathematical Biostatistics Boot Camp. This week we're going to talk about expected values and independence. Thanks to everyone on the forum that are helping us iron out the kinks.

Grading Policy Change in Week 2

As promised in the announcement yesterday, we are switching the quiz grading policy so that your official effective scores will now be based on your best score out of three attempts instead of your latest score out of three attempts. This change will also be retroactive to your Week 1 quiz scores. We have also made all of the Week 2 Quiz multiple choice questions. We are making these change in response to some helpful feedback that we received from some of your fellow students, and we hope that this helps settle some of the confusion about quiz grading.

We are also sorting out the problem that some of you experienced with quiz attempts submitted between the original quiz deadline and the extended deadline. We hope to have some answers about that problem very soon.

Keep up the good work. We are seeing a lot of great work. The Week 2 video lectures are now open for business.

Week 1 Deadlines Extended & Grading Policy Change

There was some confusion about the deadlines for the Week 1 Quiz and Homework, so they have been extended until 11:59 PM PDT today, October 1. As a result, the openings of the Week 2 Quiz and Homework have been pushed back until 11:59 AM PDT tomorrow, October 2.

We are also adjusting the grading policy for quizzes. Beginning with the Week 2 quiz, your effective score will reflect your best attempt instead of your last attempt.

Thanks to everyone for your hard work on the course so far. We are seeing a lot of good conversation on the Discussion Forums, and it is especially gratifying to see you helping one another understand the material. We are also grateful for the feedback you have been giving us.

Keep up the good work!

log

By the way, whenever I write log it means log base e (natural log). If I want log base ten or two, say, I'll write log10 or log2.

If you like youtube.

Hey all,

In case you want it. I put the lectures on Youtube as "unlisted" (so not public and searchable, but available to anyone with the link). These are the preproduction videos and have some tech issues. But if you want a list of links to the unlisted videos, they're here:

Hey everyone

Hey everyone. There were some typos in the quiz and HW that I think I've fixed. (This class is a test for me too, and it looks like I'll have to study harder.) Thanks for pointing it out in the forums. Welcome to the class and keep those forums hot!

Welcome Troops

Welcome to Mathematical Biostatistics Bootcamp.

I suggest that you get started by reviewing the syllabus. You can find it by clicking the link on the left-hand navigation bar. Please pay special attention to the due dates for each of the sections and to the grading policy at the bottom of the page.

Next, please visit the Discussion Forums and introduce yourself in the General Discussion thread. We would love to find out a little bit about each of you, including your background and your reasons for taking the course. You can also help us get to know you by updating your profile.

Finally, you can dive right into the things by completing all of the Week 1 activities:

  • Watch the Week 1 Video Lectures (Welcome to the Course, Lectures 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, 2C and 2D)
  • Complete Homework 1 (optional)
  • Complete the Week 1 Quiz (required)

I'm so glad to see you here, and I hope you have come ready to learn. Please don't hesitate to use the Discussion Forums to ask questions, and please do your best to answer the questions posted by your fellow recruits. Although I would love to be able to answer each question personally, I know that isn't realistic. I will focus my attention on answer the questions that are getting the most up-votes and the questions that seem to be generating a lot of discussion.
